Cave of Santa Barbara, Iglesias

The cave of Santa Barbara was discovered in 1952 not far from Iglesias. Today it is one of the most ancient ones in Europe.

The cave is almost entirely perfectly intact thanks to the fact that it can be reached only passing through the mine.

It is formed by a big ovoid hall with branches both downwards and upwards. The upwards ones are the most narrow, while in the downwards ones there is a small subterranean lake.

The cave is entirely shaped by fantastic concretions made in about 500 million years, with stalactites more than 20 m height, stalagmites and aragonites.

Peculiarity of the cave are the honeycomb crystals in all the walls, separated by light blue columns of aragonite and calcareous and by the huge stalactites which create charming contrasting shades.

How to reach it
Leaving from Iglesias go along the road which leads to Gonnesa and follow the directions for the cave.
