The Castle of Acquafredda, Siliqua
About 3 km from the town of Siliqua visitors will find the castle of Acquafredda, the remaining walls and merlons of which dominate the Cixerri valley.
The castle is built on the summit of a hill of volcanic origin, the most spectacular of these landforms in the area, whose origins go back no less than 5 million years.
A natural monument since 1993, thanks to its historical, cultural and environmental importance, this site is well known for the numerous plant and animal species to be found here.
The castle dates back to the 13th century. Conceived as a military fortress, it acted as a protective bulwark on several occasions, firstly under the command of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca, subsequently of the Republic of Pisa, and finally of the Crown of Aragon.
The castle is surrounded by curtain walls interspersed with towers which wind up the hill, whose steep walls served as reinforcement and natural protection.
Within the walls, at a lower level is a small bailey while climbing up the path we come upon the well-preserved remains of the cistern tower; on the summit of the hill, at 256 m asl, we find the majestic keep.
Thanks to a series of excavation and restoration campaigns, the castle of Acquafredda is open to visitors and offers a fine opportunity to appreciate both a unique architectural complex and a spectacular view over the countryside – hence a blend of historical and cultural interest plus appreciation of a splendid natural backdrop.
